Narasimha Jayanti: When the Pillar Split and Dharma Spoke

On 30 April 2026, devotees across the world observe Narasimha Jayanti—the sacred appearance day of Lord Narasimha, the fourth avatāra of Lord Vishnu. This day does not merely commemorate a mythological event; it remembers a moment when the Divine broke all boundaries of logic to protect devotion and restore dharma.

Prernamurti Bharti Shriji imparts the pious epic of Lord Narsimha from Narsimha Purana Chapter 44. Shriji says -the story of Narasimha is not just about the fall of a tyrant—it is about faith standing unshaken in the face of terror. The incarnation of Lord Narsimha in Narsimha Purana is narrated by Sage Markandeya, who is among Ashtchiranjiv in Sanatan Dharma

Prahlada: Faith That Survived the Ocean

Hiranyakashipu, the mighty demon king, believed himself invincible. Empowered by a boon from Lord Brahma after intense penance, designed to make him virtually invincible by restricting his death. He could not be killed by man or animal, indoors or outdoors, at day or night, on earth or in space, nor by any handheld weapon or projectile, essentially promising him immortality. He was  intoxicated by ego, and feared by gods and mortals alike, he demanded worship as the supreme lord. Yet, in his own palace lived a contradiction—his son Prahlada, a child whose heart belonged only to Vishnu.

When all attempts to break Prahlada’s devotion failed, Hiranyakashipu ordered him to be thrown into the ocean. The demons were certain this would be the end. But when Prahlada returned unharmed, walking calmly back into the demon city, shock spread like wildfire. Something had gone terribly wrong—for tyranny never understands grace.

The Throne of Ego and the Calm of Devotion

In a fury, Hiranyakashipu ordered Prahlada to be brought before him. The demons obeyed at once. When Prahlada entered the royal assembly, he beheld his father seated on a magnificent throne, radiant with power and wealth. Hiranyakashipu appeared resplendent with gem-studded ornaments that shimmered with bluish light, giving him a terrifying, fire-like brilliance. He was surrounded by fearsome, dark-complexioned demons, cruel and violent, resembling servants of death itself.

From a distance, Prahlada bowed respectfully to his father and stood with folded hands. Hiranyakashipu, overwhelmed by uncontrollable anger and blinded by pride, harshly rebuked his son. He declared that this would be his final warning and that Prahlada should listen carefully, for he would speak to him no more after this.

Drawing his famous sword, Chandrahāsa, Hiranyakashipu mockingly challenged Prahlada’s faith. He demanded to know where Vishnu was and dared him to prove that Vishnu was truly omnipresent. Pointing to a pillar in the assembly hall, he proclaimed that if Vishnu were indeed everywhere, He should be present there as well.

When God Emerged from the Impossible

Prahlada, recalling the assurances given to him by the Supreme Lord, meditated upon Vishnu with unwavering devotion and bowed in surrender. At that very moment, Hiranyakashipu struck the pillar with his sword. Instantly, the pillar shattered, and from within it emerged a colossal and terrifying form—the divine incarnation of Narasimha.

Narasimha was neither fully man nor fully lion. His body was immense and dreadful, instilling terror in all directions. His eyes blazed fiercely, his mouth was vast, his jaws enormous, and his arms powerful beyond measure. His nails were long and sharp, and his roar shook the heavens, filling the entire world with thunderous sound.

As Vishnu had taken this extraordinary form, Narasimha burst forth from the pillar and roared with overwhelming force. The demons rushed to surround and attack Him, but Narasimha destroyed them effortlessly with His divine strength. He shattered the royal assembly hall and annihilated every warrior who dared to confront Him.

Hiranyakashipu repeatedly sent massive armies to stop Narasimha, but each force was destroyed within moments. Finally, seeing his entire army wiped out, Hiranyakashipu himself entered the battlefield, shouting commands in desperation. Even then, the remaining demons who attacked Narasimha were slain, and the survivors fled in terror in all directions.

The End of Hiranyakashipu

As the sun approached sunset, Narasimha seized Hiranyakashipu with irresistible force. He carried him to the threshold of the palace—neither inside nor outside—and placed him upon His own thighs. With His nails, Narasimha tore open the demon king’s chest, ending his life in accordance with the divine boon that had once made Hiranyakashipu feel invincible.

After the Roar Peace Restored

With the destruction of Hiranyakashipu, Narasimha shook His hands, and the remains fell to the ground and turned to dust. Seeing this, the Lord laughed. At that moment, the gods—led by Brahma—arrived, showering flowers upon Narasimha and offering their reverent worship.

Coronation of Little Prahlad

Brahma then crowned Prahlada as the king of the demons. With his rule established, righteousness flourished among all beings. Vishnu restored Indra to his heavenly throne, and Narasimha, for the welfare of the world, proceeded to the sacred peak of Śrīśaila. There, worshipped by the gods, He remained to protect devotees and destroy evil.

The Glory of Lord Narasimha

Markandeya concluded by stating that whoever reads or listens to this sacred account of Lord Narasimha is freed from sins. Whether man or woman, anyone who hears this divine narrative is released from sorrow, suffering, harmful associations, and inner impurity. Even those burdened by unrighteous conduct are purified simply by listening to the Lord’s glorious deeds.

May Narasimha awaken within.

May devotion remain unshaken.

And may truth always find a way to emerge—even from stone.
