World No Tobacco Day 2022

Every year on May 31stWorld No Tobacco Day is observed across the world. This annual event educates the public about the dangers of smoking and the commercial tactics of cigarette firms. The World Health Organization (WHO) is battling tobacco smoking and educating people about what they can do to assert their right to health and a healthy lifestyle while also protecting future generations.

  • According to the World Health Organization, tobacco use causes 8 million deaths per year. Tobacco is the leading cause of respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), TB, and other lung diseases.
  • Tobacco contains a lot of chemicals. Tobacco smoke contains about 7000 compounds. Some substances are known to cause cancer. 69 of these cancer-causing compounds have been identified in tobacco.
  • Smoking bans are not widely enforced
  • Five cigarettes have enough nicotine to kill an average adult if ingested completely
  • Smoking regulations affect around 20% of the world’s population, mostly in high-income nations
