Akshaya Tritiya 2022

Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third day of the Shukla Paksha of the Vaishakh Hindu month. It is also called as Akha Teej. In Sanskrit, ‘Akshaya’ signifies imperishable and ‘Tritiya’ signifies third. As per scriptures, anything done on this day, gives favourable outcome. On this day, any favourable work can be done — like a wedding, house-warming ceremony, purchasing clothing, jewellery, houses, land, vehicles and so on.

Significance of Akshaya Tritiya

● Akshaya Tritiya, Gudi Padva, Vijayadashami and half of Bali Pratipada are the 3.5 auspicious muhurta (Auspicious time) wherein the whole day is considered to be auspicious to start any good work
● Any work initiated on this day is believed to become successful
● Donating water on this day holds great significance
● Offering libation of water or sesame (Tarpan, Pindadaan) to ancestors on Akshaya Tritiya gives everlasting (Akshaya) fruits
● It is a day that marks the end of Satya yuga and the beginning of Treta yuga, hence it is called as Yugadi Tithi
● God Parshuram incarnated on this day; thus, this day is called Parshuram Jayanti
● Truth and Ishwar are Indestructible . Thus, Akshay Tritiya is also known as Ishwar Tithi
● On the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya, God Hayagriva , Parashuram and Nara Narayana incarnated
● Donating barley and chickpea Sattu on Akshay Tritiya is considered as highly virtuous

What to do on this day ?

For Hindus, Akshaya Tritiya is a very auspicious and important day. Because it is regarded the most fortunate day, all spiritual and material acts carried out on this day provide the intended outcomes. It is the best time for spiritual pursuits like meditation, yoga, Japa, reading scriptures, etc. According to Vedas, any auspicious day should be primarily used for spiritual development. This is accomplished via reading scriptures, performing special pujas, worshipping the family deity (Ishta Dev), donating to charities, offering libation to ancestors, associating with devotees, feeding Brahmins, planting and watering trees, feeding the destitute, and so on. When these acts are performed on this day, one gains Akshaya (eternal) fruits.
Purchasing gold, which is the ultimate sign of wealth and success, is a popular activity on Akshaya Tritiya. On this day, gold and gold jewellery are purchased and worn to symbolise never-ending good fortune. Whole day of Akshaya Tritiya is considered to be auspicious wherein any task initiated on this day, be it spiritual or materialistic, is believed to be successful.

Spiritual meaning

• “Akshaya” is a Sanskrit word that signifies “imperishable” or “never diminishing.” The materialistic world and body are temporary, but only God is eternal.
• Akshaya Tritiya inspires us to understand the true nature of the mortal materialistic world so as to become free from all miseries.
• This day teaches us to have a strong and unwavering trust in our religion, great spiritual teachers, and good deeds that would ultimately lead to salvation.

Importance of Daan (donation) on Akshaya Tritiya

In Shri Ramcharitmanas, Tulsidasji says –

‘Pragat chari pad dharm ke, kali mahun ek pradhan .

Jen ken bidhi dinhen daan kari kalyan’ .

There are four phases of Dharma- Truth, compassion, austerity, and donation amongst which donation is the main phase in Kaliyuga. Donation given in any form is beneficial.

And if this donation is done on the day of Akshaya Tritiya, then it becomes infinitely rewarding.

Yat kinchit deeyate daanam svalpam va yadi va bahu |
tatsavam akshayam yasmaat teneyamakshaya smruta. ||

It has also been said in the Mahabharata that if a person who donates with devotion has the power to give one thousand, then he must certainly donate one hundred, one who has the power to give one hundred, should donate ten and one who has nothing, he must donate water as per his capacity. This donation of water is considered to give same fruits as donating wealth.

It is said that when there was nothing left with King Rantidev, with a pure heart he donated only water. Due to this donation of water, he went to heaven. That’s why everyone must donate as much as possible. Installing water pots for pedestrians, quenching the thirsts of birds, donating Sharbat and by keeping rectangular shaped water tanks for cows on Akshay Tritiya gives imperishable merits(punya) to the doer. Also, on this day, roasted barley and chickpea Sattu should be consumed and donated. One, who donates Sattu along with water on Akshaya Tritiya, attains infinite merits.

In this mortal world, every object, every action, and every means gets destroyed. By performing virtuous tasks like giving donation, being compassionate, benevolent, giving encouragement to the discouraged, giving strength to the weak, introspecting the glories of God, listening to Satsang, etc., one attains Daivi Sampada (divine wealth), which gives eternal fruits. Hence, on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya, one must certainly take efforts to attain Daivi Sampada to become one with the Akshaya (Ishwar or God)

Akshaya Tritiya — Jal Mahayagya

From the animals and birds to the human community, everyone suffers from thirst. Quenching their thirst in the scorching sun makes you contented. The tradition of quenching the thirst of tired travelers is ancient in our culture. Thus, earlier kings and emperors dug wells and tube wells, pots were installed so that the thirst of the travelers could be quenched. Although the wells and tube wells have reduced with time, but the beauty of the earthen pot is still visible in summer.

The cold water of the pot often attracts the footsteps of passers-by. Outside many tourist places in India, foreigners can often be seen drinking water by these pots in hot summer. If a thirsty person gets water, what can be a bigger deed of merit than this…! Therefore, during summers, arrange water for the passers-by or install a rectangular shaped vessel for the cows outside your shop or house, in which people of the nearby shops or houses can also serve by filling water in it.
