How is Holi celebrated?

The festival of Holi 2022 is celebrated with lot of fun, fervor and enthusiasm all over India except some states of South India. In most parts of India it is celebrated for two days, however there are many places where it continues for more than two days. The first day is the day of Holika Dahan. All the religious rituals take place on this day. On this day people light and gather around bonfires in the evening after moon rise and offer roasted grains, popcorns, coconuts, unbroken rice, flowers etc. to the fire God. They also chant mantras and pray for the health, happiness and wellbeing of their loved ones. The second day is the festival of colours, also known as Dhulendi or Rangwali Holi. On this day people irrespective of their age, gender, religion, castes come together to celebrate the festival by applying and throwing colours, Gulal, flowers or colourful water on each other. Children enjoy this festival the most as they play with Pichkaris (water gun), water filled balloons and smearing Gulal/colours on each other’s faces. Holi is one festival which is celebrated all over India except southern regions in slightly varied ways. Some of the most popular forms of Holi are: Lathmar Holi (Barsana), Phoolowali Holi (Vrindavan), Basant Utsav (West Bengal), Hola Mohalla (Punjab).

Why is Holi celebrated?

Holi marks the end of winter season and the arrival of spring. It symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. Also it is a festival of expression of bonds of love.  The legend of King Hiranyakashipu explains the celebration of Holika Dahan. Hiranyakashipu was the demon King who considered himself to be the supreme Lord and wanted to be worshipped by one and all. People being scared of him started worshipping him as God. However, his own son Prahlada was a devout of Lord Vishnu and prayed to him. Hiranyakashipu did not approve of this and put pressure on Prahalad to worship him, however Prahlada did not concede to his demands, which angered Hiranyakashipu to the extent that he decided to kill his own son. He took help from his sister Holika who had been granted a boon that she cannot be burnt by fire. She misused that boon and sat in fire with little Prahlada in her lap with the evil intention of burning Prahlada in fire. However due to her malicious intent the blessing turned into a curse and she herself got charred in fire, and Prahlada, who kept chanting the name of God, was saved unhurt. This death of evil Holika and victory of goodness is celebrated on Holika Dahan by lighting the bonfires.

According to another legend Holi was celebrated as a symbol of eternal love of Lord Krishna and Radha. Lord Krishna was very conscious of his dark skin colour and often wondered whether fair skinned Radha will marry him. Maa Yashoda suggested him to go to Radha and ask her to apply colour on his face. Radha did that. This playful colouring of Krishna’s face by Radha is celebrated as Rangwali Holi.

Relevance of Holi 2022 for physical and spiritual health

Benevolent and kindhearted Prernamurti Bharti Shriji has always been concerned about people and environmental health. For the welfare of all, She explains the rightful way of celebrating Holika Dahan. She pointed that those people who burn tyres, polythenes and other plastic material to ignite fire on Holika Dahan are causing spread of infections and environmental pollution. Instead, the rightful way is to ignite the holy fire of Holika Dahan with cow dung cakes and holy wood sticks like Palash, Audumbara, Neem, etc., while reciting Vedic mantras. During Holika pujan, following Vedic mantra should be recited -

असृक्पाभयसंत्रस्तै: कृता त्वं होलि बालिशै: ।

अतस्त्वां पूजयिष्यामि भूते भूतिप्रदा भव ।।

It creates a pure environment killing harmful viruses, bacteria and contributes to furthering good health and clean environment. Holika Dahan is a collective campaign to destroy all the contagious diseases from our environment.

Science Behind Holi 2018 - Prernamurti Bharti Shriji

She also suggested the use of organic and natural colours on the day of Holi which can be easily made from Palash (Butea monosperma) flowers, turmeric, beetroot, marigold, coriander leaves, etc. instead of chemical, dye based colours which are harmful for our skin and health. She also enlightens the spiritual and symbolic meaning of Holi celebration. Holika Dahan signifies the victory of ‘Dharma’ (Prahlada) over ‘Adharma’ (Holika, Hiranyakashipu). Hiranyakashipu tried his best to agonize and kill pious Prahlada but failed and was ultimately defeated by death. Shriji advises all to develop this Dharma or ethical principles within oneself to save oneself from all evils, and those who let Adharma grow within themselves will be sooner or later be destroyed like Hiranyakashipu. Holi also teaches us to kill the devil (vices) which is inside us through Bhakti (devotion to God). Bhakti might seem to be small (like that of Prahlada) or insignificant, yet it is much more powerful over the evil within and outside.
The celebration of Holi with Shriji is a spectacular sight where each and every devotee gets soaked in colours of divine wisdom, love, and devotion.

How it is different from other festivals?

Holi is a fascinating festival of colours which throws light on the rich Indian tradition and value system of unity in diversity. Holi brings people of all religion, caste, community together in its celebration and dissolves boundaries which divide people. On this day people let go of their inhibitions, grudges, animosity and come together to enjoy Holi.

Shri Lakshmi Devi (Maiyaji)

Holi 2022 also marks the incarnation of a noble and holy Saint namely H. H. Shri Lakshmi Devi or Maiya ji, lovingly called by her followers. Maiyaji is the mother of Prernamurti Bharti Shriji. She is an epitome of wisdom (Gyan), compassion, sacrifice, patience, forbearance. Despite being afflicted with number of physical ailments she remains unperturbed from those and keeps on blessing her followers and gives them Darshan always with a sweet and kind smile on her face. Her followers and people around Her can never assess the degree of pain She is suffering from as She never gives importance to the physical pain to let it overshadow Her divine wisdom and persona. When people ask how She remains so poised and positive despite being so ill, She replies by saying ‘Pain is in the place of pain (body), ‘I’ am situated in my place (Gyan)’. She is a truly enlightened soul, and this enlightenment is reflected in each and every act of Her life. Being humble and grounded like a tree fully laden with fruits, She does not reveal her divine knowledge too openly but only when prompted and initiated by Shriji.

Prernamurti Bharti Shriji with MAIYA

Maiyaji loves to be in solitude (Ekant Priya), therefore nobody knows who She is? What She is? Great people like Her deliver their message through their behaviour or life. Often when Maiyaji used to sit with devotees to solve their spiritual questions, the devotees wrote down the conversations between them and Maiyaji in their diary for their reference. Using those conversations as base, the valuable insights of Maiyaji’s life are compiled in book “THE DEPTH OF WISDOM ज्ञान की गहराई” to satisfy the curiosity of spiritual seekers. This book features Maiyaji’s divine qualities like sacrifice, faithfulness, devotion, modesty, self-control, kindness, selfless deeds, being least bothered about vices and virtues coming across, simplicity, being egoless, sympathetic, etc.

THE DEPTH OF WISDOM 'ज्ञान की गहराई'

Devotee: Maa! What is the goal of human life?
Pujya Maiyaji: The ultimate goal of human life is the realization of self. One has to achieve it, irrespective of whether he does it in one birth or thousand births.

Devotee: Maa! What should we do to achieve this goal?
Pujya Maiyaji: Do sadhana, seek company of saints and follow their preaching’s.

Devotee: Maa! What is ‘sadhana’?
Pujya Maiyaji: By doing which, the thoughts and mind goes upward, gets peaceful, enhances devotion for God that is called ‘Sadhana’. There is one story in ‘Vedanta’ that a bird who is surrounded by sea from all sides when gets tired by flying nonstop, it takes shelter on some boat, similarly when our senses get tired by roaming here and there, they take shelter in the soul. Bringing back the roaming senses to that one supreme being is called as “Sadhana”.

Devotee: Maa! Who is a Sadhak?
Pujya Maiyaji: One, who is an austere and achieves the ultimate goal of life.

Devotee: Maiyaji! What is the strength of a Sadhak?
Pujya Maiyaji: Prayer is the strength of a Sadhak, like a mother fulfils the wishes/demand of her crying child, GOD also listens to the prayers of His devotee who is truly longing for Him.
